SailGP experience

Updated: Aug 22, 2024

SailGP is a global sailing competition with high stakes, and I’ve been fortunate to be involved in their Sydney event over the past two years. Here’s how it all unfolded:

In 2023, I applied to be part of the SailGP Wazp Inspired program and was thrilled to be selected as one of 16 participants. This opportunity immersed us in the exhilarating world of foiling. We had access to the athletes' tech sites and racing preparations which was the first time I was exposed to the data collection and reflections that professional sailors undertake everyday. I learned to sail the Wazp over the course of the week, and even raced alongside the F50s while they trained. It was an incredible experience that allowed me to build friendships with fellow athletes and connect with professional sailors, giving me a deep understanding of what SailGP is all about.

The following year, thanks to these connections, I was able to step up to a new role as a Local Event Manager Assistant. I was overjoyed to join the event again, spending two weeks onsite before the competition. This role gave me valuable insight into the inner workings of the event. I took on significant responsibilities, managed multiple teams, and contributed to the success of the event. Now I wasn't just a youth sailor who got into the inspire program, I was walking amongst the professionals organising what they had for lunch! It was an immensely rewarding experience, and I look forward to the next time SailGP returns to Sydney.

After the Sydney event, as the teams moved on, I was invited to join them in Christchurch for the same role. This opportunity was priceless, allowing me to gain new experiences and manage guest services during what was expected to be the largest stop on the circuit. Despite some delays and the cancellation of the first day of racing, the event went smoothly, and I was thrilled to be part of it all over again. I recorded some clips of the amazing moments I had so watch the video below!
